Es scheint so, dass der Komet vor wenigen Tagen einen weiteren Ausbruch erlitten und wahrscheinlich eine Kernteilung hat. Beobachter sagen, dass der Finlay nun zw. 7 und 8 mag hell ist. Normalerweise sollte dieser bei 12 mag rumdümpeln. Der Komet befindet sich zur Zeit im östlichen Bereichs des Wassermanns rund 20 Grad hoch am Abendhimmel.
